GARDENING:

  • The 7th Street Garden
    Originally an urban food garden built by Shaw EcoVillage's EcoDesign Corps program, the 7th Street Garden offers youth and adults alike a safe, outdoor setting to learn, grow, and nourish. Open to the public, schools, groups and organizations can schedule classes or workshops in the garden.
  • City Blossoms Gardens
    A Washington, D.C. area organization that uses gardening to create environmental, nutritional, and cultural connections for children and youth. They are dedicated to empowering children, youth and community organizations in developing dynamic and productive green projects.
  • Kids Growing Food
    The Connecting Kids to the Food System initiative, a partnership between Cornell University and the University of the District of Columbia Cooperative Extension Service (UDC/CES), has fostered Kids Growing Food gardens at 16 inner city Washington DC schools since 2003. Qualifying teachers, identified by UDC/CES DC Agriculture in the Classroom staff (DCAITC), receive a one-time $500 start-up grant, professional development training workshops, educational and gardening materials, connections to others in the Kids Growing Food Network, as well as links to other food systems, nutrition education, grant and donation programs.

  • Washington Youth Garden – Friends of the National Arboretum
    Washington Youth Garden provides classroom lessons on nutrition, propagation, soil, seeds, germination, insects and pollination as well as hand-on outdoor gardening activities during the growing season.

    The Audubon Naturalist Society promotes conservation and biodiversity and provides educational programs for children and adults, as well as many special events.

  • DC Environmental Education Consortium (DCEEC)
    DCEEC's mission is to bolster a network of environmental and conservation educators, increasing their capacity to provide meaningful environmental education for the residents of the District of Columbia.

  • Living Classrooms of the National Capital Region
    Living Classrooms Foundations offers many diverse environmental program opportunities for youth.
  • National Wildlife Foundation
    NWF provides an array of teacher training workshops and environmental education curriculum. NWF also runs a schoolyard habitat program , in which you can turn your school grounds into a certified schoolyard habitat.
  • Project Learning Tree
  • PLT uses the forest as a "window" on the world to increase students' understanding of our environment; stimulate students' critical and creative thinking; develop students' ability to make informed decisions on environmental issues; and instill in students the commitment to take responsible action on behalf of the environment.
  • US National Arboretum
    The US National Arboretum offers an array of environmental education events and programs.

WATERSHED EDUCATION:

  • Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay
    This site provides information on the Chesapeake Bay Watershed as well as a description of their programs and projects. They are currently involved in is providing technical assistance to seven DC schools with regard to low impact development (LID) within the school grounds, through the Let It Rain program.
  • Anacostia Watershed Society
    The Anacostia Watershed Society hosts many conservation, restoration and outdoor skills events including tree plantings, storm drain stenciling projects, river cleanups and paddling clinics.
  • Bridging the Watershed
    BTW’s site provides earth science, chemistry and life science activities and lessons as well as workshops and summer trainings for teachers.
  • Chesapeake Bay Foundation
    This site offers info on the Chesapeake Bay, as well as a listing of teacher development opportunities and sample curriculum activities.
  • Chesapeake Bay Program
    This site offers information specifically for teachers and students on the Chesapeake Bay including publications, links and other resources.
  • DC Department of Environment, Watershed Protection Division
    The Department of Health’s Watershed Protection Division offers several Environmental Education workshops, programs and resources . They have an Environmental Education Resource Center, located at 51 N Street, NE, Room 5015, which contains a variety of curricula, audio-visual materials, kits, gardening tools, lab equipment, references, models, brochures, maps, posters, etc. Educators may browse, borrow materials, and take advantage of give-away items. They also have stormdrain markers available for free.
  • Environmental Concern
    Environmental Concern is a public non-profit corporation dedicated to wetland education, restoration, and research.

YOUTH INTERNSHIPS AND JOB OPPORTUNTIES:

  • Casey Trees
    Casey Trees offers paid summer internships for high school students living in the District. Working in small teams, interns will learn to identify, inventory and maintain DC’s street trees.
  • Earth Conservation Corps
    The Earth Conservation Corps provides hands-on environmental education, job training and community service programs for people of all ages from diverse backgrounds, with an emphasis on serving at-risk youth from the inner-city neighborhoods of Washington D.C. With support from Americorps, ECC youth receive a living stipend and education award for a year of community service.
  • The Environmentors Project
    The Environmentors Project is an environment-based mentoring program which inspires, motivates, and engages youth from under-resourced communities.
  • Student Conservation Association
    SCA provides job and internship opportunities for youth interested in the environment.
