  • DC Department of Department, Sediment and Stormwater Technical Services Branch
    If you are planning to implement a large scale project such as removing asphalt or changing the grade of your school grounds, you will need to contact the Sediment and Stormwater Technical Services to receive a permit to do so.     DDOT’s Urban Forestry Administration site describes the benefits of trees and lists tree species in the District as well as local events and forestry resources.

    Green Spaces for DC provides many local gardening resources.
  • Mayor’s Call Center (202) 727-1000
    The Mayor's Call Center if: you would like to have a tree planted in an empty tree box; know of a street tree that is damaged and may need to be pruned or removed; or see a tree stump that needs to be removed from a tree box.  Your request will be forwarded to the DC Urban Forestry Administration.  Keep note of your service request number so you can follow-up on the request if necessary.

    The National Tree Trust provides urban forestry resources and offers grants to strengthen the capacity of environmental non-profits.
  • National Park Service: Learn NPS
    NPS’s LearnNPS program and Web site provides information for educators and students interested in exploring national parks through workshops, field trips or curriculum activities.
  • USDA Forest Service – Urban and Community Forestry
    USDA’s Urban and Community Forestry Program provides financial and technical assistance to plan, protect, establish, and manage trees, forests, and related resources.

    KidsGardening.com provides detailed information about involving youth in designing, planting and maintaining gardens.

  • Washington Youth Garden – Friends of the National Arboretum
    Washington Youth Garden provides classroom lessons on nutrition, propagation, soil, seeds, germination, insects and pollination as well as hand-on outdoor gardening activities during the growing season.

  • Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay
    This site provides information on the Chesapeake Bay Watershed as well as a description of their programs and projects. They are currently involved in is providing technical assistance to seven DC schools with low impact development (LID) projects within the school grounds through the Let It Rain program.

    This site provides an overview of river restoration in the United States.
  • Anacostia Watershed Network
    This site provides comprehensive information on the Anacostia Watershed.
  • Anacostia Watershed Society
    The Anacostia Watershed Society hosts many conservation, restoration and outdoor skills events including tree plantings, storm drain stenciling projects, river cleanups and paddling clinics. Their site provides a wealth of information the Anacostia Watershed and a excellent list of related links.
  • Chesapeake Bay Foundation
    This site offers info on the Chesapeake Bay, as well as a listing of teacher development opportunities and sample curriculum activities.

    This site offers information specifically for teachers and students on the Chesapeake Bay including publications, links and other resources.
  • DC Department of the Environment, Watershed Protection Division
    DDOE's Watershed Protection Division offers expertise and resources related to stormwater mana gement and sediment and erosion control. DDOE has an Environmental Education Resource Center, located at 51 N Street, NE, Room 5015, which contains a variety of curricula, audio-visual materials, kits, gardening tools, lab equipment, references, models, brochures, maps, posters, etc. Educators may browse, borrow materials, and take advantage of give-away items.

    DC Greenworks’ site offers information about Low Impact Development (LID) projects such as rain gardens, greenroofs and rain barrels.
  • DC Water and Sewer Authority
    This site provides an excellent overview of the city’s sewer system and describes plans to improve our treatment facilities and the city’s water quality. They also provide maps of storm drains in the District.

    EPA provides an overview of Water Quality Standards as well as regional and local information and laws.

    The Potomac Conservancy works to conserve the Potomac River though community action and advocacy.

    The Audubon Naturalist Society promotes conservation and biodiversity and provides educational programs and special events for children and adults.

    This site provides information on bird conservation and research as well as information about local and national advocacy efforts and special events.
  • National Wildlife Federation
    NWF provides an array of teacher training workshops and environmental education curriculum. NWF also runs a Schoolyard Habitat Program, which encourages and supports turning school grounds into a certified schoolyard habitats.
